Indian equity benchmarks started the new trading week on a subdued note, with both the Nifty 50 and S&P BSE Sensex recording meaningful losses during mid-morning trade on Monday, August 17, 2026. The Nifty 50 index fell 129.35 points or 0.52% to trade at 24,238.75, slipping below the key 24,250 mark during the session. The S&P BSE Sensex dropped 504.15 points or 0.66% to 77,504.73 as of 11:30 IST.
Market sentiment remained largely subdued as investors assessed a large number of Q1 FY27 earnings announcements during the ongoing results season. The absence of strong directional cues from either domestic or global markets kept buying interest limited across most sectors, contributing to the cautious mood among traders and investors alike.
Broader Market and Breadth Data Paint Weak Picture
The weakness in the session was not confined to the headline indices alone. In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index declined 0.16%, while the BSE 250 SmallCap Index fell 0.29%, indicating that selling pressure spread across market capitalisation segments.
Market breadth on the BSE confirmed the negative tone of the session, with 2,384 shares falling against 1,742 shares rising. A total of 274 shares remained unchanged during the session, reflecting the cautious stance adopted by a large section of market participants. PSU Bank shares added further weight to the market by extending their losses for the third consecutive trading session, underscoring continued selling pressure in the public sector banking space.
Nifty IT Index Tumbles 1.64%, Infosys Leads the Fall
The most significant drag on the market during the session came from the information technology sector. The Nifty IT Index dropped 1.64% to 30,843.70, making it the standout loser among all sectoral indices tracked during the session. This decline came after the index had already fallen 1.93% over the two preceding trading sessions, reflecting a sustained wave of selling pressure in the technology space.
Among individual IT stocks, Infosys led the losses with a sharp decline of 2.51%. HCL Technologies dropped 2.13%, while Tata Consultancy Services shed 1.95%. Mphasis fell 1.6%, Tech Mahindra declined 1.56%, and LTM dropped 1.46%. Wipro fell 1.38% and Persistent Systems declined 0.71%, rounding out the broad-based losses within the sector.
Not all IT stocks moved lower, however. Oracle Financial Services Software edged up 0.61% and Coforge gained 0.17%, bucking the broader downtrend within the IT segment and offering some relief to sector investors.
Crude Oil and Geopolitical Worries Weigh on Mood
Investors monitored several key domestic and global factors during the session that contributed to the cautious market tone. Crude oil prices remained a significant concern, with Brent crude hovering around $89 a barrel. Progress toward a US-Iran peace deal had stalled, and tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained disrupted, keeping energy supply risks elevated and adding uncertainty to the global economic outlook.
On the domestic front, investors tracked the progress of the monsoon, which is considered a critical indicator for India's broader economic health, given its direct impact on agricultural output and rural demand. Developments on the global geopolitical front, along with movements in gold prices, also continued to influence investor sentiment during the session.
Global Cues Mixed as US Data and Fed Minutes Loom
Asian markets traded mostly higher on Monday, although gains were tempered by renewed concerns over the Middle East conflict and elevated crude oil prices. Japan's economy grew at an annualised rate of 1.1% in the April-June quarter, slowing from the previous quarter and falling short of market expectations of 2% growth. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, Japan's GDP rose 0.3%, also below the 0.5% expected by economists.
On Wall Street, US stocks ended lower on Friday after weaker-than-expected retail sales data raised concerns about the health of consumer spending. The S&P 500 fell 0.17% to 7,785.76, the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.28% to 26,729.16, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 0.20% to 53,732.41. Despite Friday's decline, the S&P 500 managed to post its third consecutive weekly gain.
On the inflation front, US consumer prices rose 0.1% in July, while producer prices were unchanged, according to data released the previous week. The softer inflation readings reduced expectations of a near-term Federal Reserve rate hike. However, investors remained attentive to persistent inflation risks stemming from higher energy prices. The minutes of the Federal Reserve's July policy meeting, due for release on Wednesday, were being closely watched by global market participants for further clarity on the central bank's policy direction, with these cues continuing to shape the mood in Indian equity markets.
