Essar Group's Mesabi Metallics will build what President Trump called the largest steel plant in American history in Iowa, a $15 billion investment expected to produce 10 million tonnes of steel annually and create 1,750 permanent jobs.
The Announcement
US President Donald Trump unveiled Essar Group's plans to build a massive steel plant in Iowa at an investment of $15 billion, making the announcement in the Oval Office with Essar Group co-founder Ravi Ruia and his son Rewant by his side. "Today, we're thrilled to announce that Mesabi Metallics will be building the largest steel plant in American history in the great state of Iowa," Trump said. Mesabi Metallics chairman Rewant Ruia thanked Trump "for bringing back the importance of building things in America."
The Scale Of The Project
The facility is expected to produce 10 million tonnes of steel a year and create as many as 1,750 permanent jobs in Iowa, according to a White House official. Mesabi Metallics is aiming to start production by 2030. Rewant Ruia said the plant "will use the latest technology and will compete head-to-head with any steel plant in the world on size, quality and on cost."
The Iron Ore Supply Chain Behind It
The Iowa plant will draw its iron ore from a new mine the company has invested $2.5 billion to build in Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range, a belt stretching 80 to 100 miles that contributed about 60 per cent of total US iron ore production during the 20th century. The mine is expected to produce about 7.5 million tonnes of iron per year and create roughly 350 jobs, and notably will be the first new iron mine built in the US in 50 years.
Senior US officials present at the announcement included Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Export-Import Bank chair John Jovanovic, and senior director for Global Supply Chain David Copley, underscoring the level of federal interest in the project.

Why It Matters
For an Indian conglomerate, a $15 billion commitment to build the largest steel plant in American history, backed by a dedicated $2.5 billion iron mine investment, represents one of the largest single industrial bets any Indian promoter group has made in the US market. The project also fits into a broader pattern of US policy actively courting foreign steel investment as part of its push to rebuild domestic heavy manufacturing capacity, with the presence of the Energy and Commerce Secretaries alongside Trump signalling this is being treated as a strategically significant investment rather than a routine industrial announcement. For Essar Group, successfully executing a project of this scale by 2030 would materially deepen its footprint in US heavy industry, a sector where Indian corporate investment has historically been limited compared to IT services and pharmaceuticals.
