The Sensex rose 1,109.10 points to 73,033.78 on October 13, its best single-day gain in four months. The Nifty IT index jumped 5.22 per cent after HCLTech beat estimates.
Benchmarks Erase Monday’s Losses
Domestic equities posted their biggest one-day gains in four months on Tuesday, Business Standard reported. The Nifty 50 rose 358.60 points, or 1.6 per cent, to 22,721.95. The BSE Sensex gained 1.54 per cent to close at 73,033.78.
The rally wiped out Monday’s losses, The Week reported. Forty-six of the 50 Nifty stocks closed higher, according to Daily Financial. The Sensex hit an intraday high of 73,045.67 and an intraday low of 71,703.56.
The Nifty had touched a 2026 closing low of 22,179.90 on October 8. Tuesday’s close sits 2.44 per cent above that level.
Investors gained about ₹4.12 lakh crore in combined market value on the day, Equentis estimated.
IT Index Posts Biggest Gain Since May 2025
The Nifty IT index surged 5.22 per cent to 29,830.10. It was the index’s biggest one-day gain since May 12, 2025. All 10 constituents advanced, Business Standard said.
Reuters, carried by Business Recorder, described it as the IT index’s biggest one-day gain in more than 17 months. The index had already risen 3.02 per cent on October 9. TCS had reported a 14.9 per cent rise in profit, Daily Financial said.
Even after the rally, the sector remains down 21.2 per cent so far this year, The Week reported. Investors worry that generative AI could squeeze pricing and reshape demand for conventional software services work.
HCLTech Leads With Strong Quarter
HCLTech led the surge. Its shares rose more than 8 per cent, after the company reported better-than-expected September quarter results a day earlier.
Consolidated net profit rose 21.18 per cent from a year earlier to ₹5,132 crore for the July to September quarter of FY27. The Week said the gain came from stronger margins in advanced AI operations and lower tax outflow.
TCS advanced 6.8 per cent, HDFC Sky reported. HCLTech, TCS, Shriram Finance, Tech Mahindra and Infosys were among the biggest gainers on the Nifty 50.
HCLTech closed at ₹1,326 on Tuesday. The stock is still down 18.22 per cent over one year, Daily Financial said, so the recovery is early.
Rupee, Crude and Tax Remarks Add Support
Reuters said support from the Reserve Bank of India for the rupee boosted sentiment. HDFC Sky reported that easing pressure on the rupee after fresh RBI measures helped the market.
Business Standard said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s remarks on long-term capital gains tax and securities transaction tax lifted sentiment. Equentis listed a firmer rupee and easing crude oil prices among the drivers.
Metals, autos, public sector banks, consumer durables and realty stocks also advanced, HDFC Sky reported. Pharma and a few other sectors lagged.
Foreign Investors Sold, Domestic Funds Bought
Foreign institutional investors sold ₹1,305.13 crore of shares on Tuesday, according to provisional NSE data cited by Daily Financial. Domestic institutional investors bought ₹2,439.24 crore.
Foreign investors have been heavy sellers this month. PTI reported that they pulled ₹44,166 crore from Indian equities in the first part of October. That took net outflows for 2026 to ₹3.04 lakh crore.
Markets Give Back Part of the Gain
The market slipped on Wednesday. The Nifty 50 closed at 22,622.70, down 99.25 points or 0.44 per cent. The Sensex finished at 72,781.89, down 251.89 points or 0.34 per cent.
The Bank Nifty settled at 55,316, down 165.05 points or 0.30 per cent. Banking stocks stayed under pressure, while gains in IT and FMCG shares limited the fall.
GIFT Nifty had pointed to a lower start on Wednesday, down about 70 to 90 points near 22,770, Daily Financial reported.
